From Sweden to Spain: My Long-Distance Walking Journey to Mental Strength

Imagine standing at the start of a road that stretches across countries, cultures, and landscapes—an adventure both humbling and inspiring. For me, that road begins in Sweden and ends in Spain, a long-distance walking challenge I’m embarking on with a heavy backpack and an open mind. This adventure is equal parts personal challenge, mental transformation, and physical endurance.

It’s far outside my comfort zone, but that’s exactly the reason I’ve chosen to do it. Walking from Sweden to Spain is not about reaching the final destination—it’s a quest to rediscover resilience, self-awareness, and a deeper connection with the world around me.

Why I Chose This Path

This isn’t a spontaneous leap into the unknown. It stems from a deep need for growth and change. A short while ago, I faced a personal setback: losing money in the stock market. While the financial loss wasn’t catastrophic, it unveiled a far greater challenge—plummeting morale, self-doubt, and a sense of stagnation. I’d been living a comfortable life, yet that comfort had turned into complacency.

I realized I wasn’t challenging myself or pushing boundaries. Something had to change. I needed to prove to myself that I could rise to challenges on my terms. That’s when the idea struck me—walking across Europe would force me to face my fears, adapt to adversity, and mentally strengthen myself while experiencing the freedom and simplicity that comes with life on the road.

Preparing for the Challenge of a Lifetime

Walking from Sweden to Spain isn’t a feat that should be taken lightly, as I quickly realized. It requires preparation on every level—physical, logistical, and mental. My chosen route, the E9 path, will span thousands of miles, cutting through countries like Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, France, and finally Spain.

Physical Preparation

One of my biggest priorities has been conditioning my body for the endurance challenge. Carrying a heavy backpack day after day requires more than just strong legs—it demands stamina, back strength, and crucially, an ability to recover quickly. I’ve spent weeks hiking with increasingly heavier loads to prepare my body for the long haul.

Learning the Logistics

Long-distance walking isn’t just “walk and see what happens.” It comes with countless considerations. Where will I stay each night? How much food do I need to carry before I can replenish supplies? Where do I find potable water? I’ve spent countless hours researching accommodations like camping sites, where I can pitch my tent or if there are any shelters in the vicinity. Fire-making, navigating unfamiliar trails, and maintaining gear are additional skills I’ve practiced to ensure I’m as self-reliant as possible.

Mental Preparation

Perhaps the most critical aspect of preparation has been mental. How do you prepare for weeks or months of solitude? How do you handle the inevitable moments of discouragement when the mountain ahead feels insurmountable? I’ve spent time journaling, meditating, and practicing mindfulness to prepare my mind for the mental hurdles ahead. This entire experience is as much a mental challenge as it is physical.

What I Hope to Gain

A question I often hear is, “Why take on such a massive challenge?” My answer lies in the lessons that such an adventure offers. I believe long-distance walking has the power to transform us in profound ways.

Building Resilience

One of my primary goals is to build mental toughness. Life on the trail isn’t easy—there will be setbacks, doubts, and physical discomfort. But by pushing through and adapting to these challenges, I hope to strengthen my resilience and my ability to manage fear and self-doubt.

Fostering Simplicity and Gratitude

There’s beauty in simplicity, and walking with all my belongings on my back will bring me closer to that way of life. Every meal, every sunset, and every interaction with fellow travelers will be a reminder to live in the moment and appreciate the simple joys.

Enhancing Self-Awareness

When life slows down to the rhythm of your footsteps, you start to connect more deeply with yourself and the world around you. Long-distance walking offers a unique opportunity for introspection and self-discovery.

Experiencing the World

Crossing multiple countries on foot allows for an intimate experience of their landscapes, cultures, and people. It’s a chance to slow down and savor the beauty of places that many people only rush through.

The Benefits of Long-Distance Walking

Long-distance walking isn’t just a personal challenge; it’s also a way to experience numerous physical, mental, and emotional benefits:

  • Physical Fitness: Walking for hours each day provides a low-impact workout that strengthens muscles, improves endurance, and enhances cardiovascular health, if I manage to stay healthy and avoid injuries.
  • Mental Clarity: Spending uninterrupted time in nature brings peace and clarity. It’s a fantastic way to de-stress and focus on what truly matters.
  • Connection with Nature: Being immersed in nature for weeks on end fosters a greater appreciation for the environment and your place within it.
  • A Sense of Achievement: Completing a pilgrimage or a long walking route is an accomplishment you’ll carry with you forever.

Advice for Fellow Adventurers

If you’re considering a similar challenge—or even starting with smaller adventures—here are a few practical tips to guide you:

  1. Plan Smart: Know your route well, but stay flexible to adapt to unforeseen changes.
  2. Start with Day Trips: Build your confidence and endurance by starting with smaller hikes close to home.
  3. Pack Light: Only bring essentials—carrying unnecessary weight can drain your energy quickly. Unless you are a masochist, and want to punish yourself, like me, do not bring more than you need.
  4. Invest in Good Gear: A comfortable backpack, sturdy boots, and high-quality outdoor clothing can make all the difference.
  5. Mental Training is Key: Prepare for moments of doubt by practicing mindfulness or visualizing how you’ll push through tough situations.
  6. Enjoy the Process: Remember, it’s not just about reaching your destination; it’s about enjoying the entire journey.

My hope is that my adventure inspires you to consider your own version of a “long-distance walk.” Whether that means taking a leap toward a fitness goal, trying something completely outside your comfort zone, or simply slowing down to rediscover what matters most, it’s worth taking those first steps.
